A 4×4 wood post sitting in wet clay soaks up moisture at the ground line, rots, and starts leaning after a few freeze-thaw seasons. Around Grand Forks and Fargo, prairie wind on a full privacy panel speeds that up.
That is why we never set wood in the ground. Every post has a galvanized Schedule 40 steel core driven below the frost-movement zone, with a wood sleeve over it so the fence still looks like wood. Three rails and a 2×6 top board carry the wind load that two-rail fences can’t.
