Fence Company in Thief River Falls, MN
Vinyl, wood, chain link and ornamental fencing, permitted under the City’s current fence ordinance.
The expensive fence is the one you buy twice. In Thief River Falls that usually happens the same way: posts set in a shallow concrete pad, frozen ground pushing them up a little each winter, and a line that is visibly off within a few seasons.
We drive posts below the frost line into stable soil. It costs more time at installation and removes the second purchase entirely.
Vinyl, wood, chain link and ornamental, for homes and businesses across Thief River Falls. We also offer fence repair. Fence Rules in Thief River Falls, MN
Thief River Falls tightened its fence ordinance in 2025, and the change is not reflected everywhere on the City’s own site. Here is what the ordinance now says, with the official sources linked below.
- A permit issued by the City Building Official is required for every fence built on any property within city limits. There is no height exemption. The requirement comes from a 2025 amendment to City Code Chapter 35, Ordinance 35.03.
- The City’s construction permit guide still lists fences under 7 feet among work that needs no permit. That line does not match the current fence ordinance.
- For a fence on the property line, written permission from each adjoining property owner must be attached to the permit application. The permission must include consent to enter the adjoining property for reasonable maintenance and repair, or name who holds maintenance responsibility and access rights.
- On a property line fence, the finished side must face the adjoining property owner, and verifying where the property line runs is the owner’s responsibility.
- No fence in a front yard may exceed 4 feet. Side and rear yard fences follow the height limits set by zoning, and any fence 8 feet or higher requires a conditional use permit.
- On corner lots, no structure or planting more than 30 inches above street centerline grade is permitted. The corner yard setback is set by a vision triangle with sides 35 feet long, measured from the point where the outside edges of the corner street curbs intersect.
- No fence may obstruct or encroach on a public right-of-way, easement or utility access area without the City’s written permission through the encroachment permit process. Next to an alley, a fence must be set back at least 5 feet from the alley right-of-way line.
- The owner is solely responsible for keeping a fence in a safe, upright and aesthetically acceptable condition. The City can issue a notice with a deadline for maintenance, repair or removal, and may seek a court order if it is not followed.
- Razor wire and barbed wire are prohibited, except in commercial or industrial zones, where barbed wire may be allowed with a conditional use permit for security on fences 7 feet or higher, and not within 10 feet of a property line that abuts a street. Electric fences are allowed only around gardens to keep animals out, with visible warning signs.

Fence Installation FAQs for Thief River Falls, MN
The 2025 permit change, property line fences, corner lots, right-of-way and alley setbacks, height limits and fence repair in Thief River Falls.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Thief River Falls?
Yes. In 2025 the City Council amended City Code Chapter 35, Ordinance 35.03 to require a permit for all fences constructed on any property within city limits, and the City states that no fence shall be constructed without a permit issued by the City Building Official. For a fence on the property line, written permission from each adjoining property owner must be attached to the application.
I read that fences under 7 feet don't need a permit. Is that right?
Not any more. The City’s construction permit guide still lists fences under 7 feet among work that needs no permit, but the current fence ordinance requires a permit for every fence. Confirm with the building department at 218-681-2500 if you want it from the source.
What are the rules for a fence on a corner lot in Thief River Falls?
No structure or planting more than 30 inches above street centerline grade is permitted on corner lots. The corner yard setback is set by a vision triangle with sides 35 feet long, measured from the point where the outside edges of the corner street curbs intersect.
How far from the road does my fence have to be?
Outside corner lots, the ordinance does not set a fixed distance from the road. A fence may not obstruct or encroach on a public right-of-way, easement or utility access area without the City’s written permission through the encroachment permit process, and next to an alley it must be set back at least 5 feet from the alley right-of-way line. Because right-of-way often extends past the visible edge of the road, the zoning administrator can confirm where the line falls on your lot at 218-681-8506.
Can I build a fence 8 feet tall or higher in Thief River Falls?
Only with a conditional use permit. The ordinance requires one for any fence 8 feet in height or higher, to make sure it meets the wind load calculations in the State Building Code. It is a separate approval from the standard fence permit, so it is worth deciding on height early.
What is the best fence for privacy in Thief River Falls?
Vinyl and wood privacy fences are the most common choices. Vinyl offers a clean look with low maintenance, while wood provides more design flexibility. In a front yard the ordinance caps any fence at 4 feet, so a full-height privacy fence belongs in the side or rear yard, where zoning sets the height limit.
Do you offer fence repair in Thief River Falls?
Yes. The City’s fence ordinance makes the owner solely responsible for keeping a fence in a safe, upright and aesthetically acceptable condition, and the City can issue a notice with a deadline for maintenance, repair or removal. In Thief River Falls a fence usually goes out of line at the posts, where frozen ground pushes a shallow concrete pad up a little each winter. See our fence repair page for how the work is done.
